Mess Free Toddler Breakfast

Pretty much impossible, right?  Unfortunately (for both Claire and I), that has to be my goal in the morning, or else I'd never make it to work.

We've been working with utensils for a while now, and Claire is pretty good with the fork.  She needs a little help getting a bite loaded sometimes, and a little redirection when she gets carried away stabbing a bite, but she has no problem getting the fork to her mouth.

The spoon still needs some work however, and I take the blame for that.

I've said before, I'm not a big fan of messes and I still haven't gotten any better, so Claire's spoon practice has always been fairly controlled.  Claire has started protesting all my control, and REFUSES help now.  We had almost an hour long meltdown the other night after Darren tried to help her with a spoon full of applesauce.  :(

Luckily for me, oatmeal sticks to the spoon pretty well, and so far she hasn't needed a bath before I go to work!

Little miss is also sporting a wanna be black eye.  It's mostly a scratch, but there's a little bit of a line that looks like she bumped it too.  It happened at school, but whatever it was didn't cause tears, so nobody is quite sure what happened.  Oh well, the first of many I'm sure!

  1. It is sorta frustrating but also very dear when they want to do everything for themselves. She looks very proud of herself!

  2. I found these to work best for my kids. Even with yogurt. I also put a paper towel under the bowls to catch spills & drips.

  4. So darn sweet! When LC started hijacking the spoon, her OT recommended we each get one. Usually, LC was too distracted at loading her own spoon to mind when I would sneak in a bite with the one I was using. Claire is SUCH a big girl with her utensils!!! There is just something adorable about that sweet bowl of oatmeal and your little scruffy black-eyed bit behind it. Love, love that girl.

  5. I hate messes, too. I think Samantha ate oatmeal for the first 3 years of her life (won't touch it anymore, though), and now has moved on to frozen pancakes. Mess-free! :-)

  7. Gotta love the independence at this age. Sutter squeezes his lips or screams in protest if I even touch his tray after the food has been delivered! It's messy but Sutter mastered his spoon skills with yogurt. I'd give him a scoop (about a tablespoon) in a bowl and let him practice before each meal while I prepared the rest of his meal. After a few days his scoop was much better and the amount that made it into his mouth was more than the amount on his shirt! LOL

  8. That's awesome that she is so good with a fork. Lucas is opposite, he is good at the spoon but needs help with the fork. I'm not a fan of messes either but we learned that Lucas likes to do everything himself too and will sometimes refuse to eat if we force it. So there is always, unfortunately, something in his hair ;)

  9. Its so funny you posted this. I was just saying that I nred to get working in Arina's eating with utensils. I absolutely hate messy babies, and have never let my children do that. But I just need to so she can learn!

  10. I so need to work on Zoey and this very thing. She is way behind Claire and you know, I just can't get past the mess... I feel like the worst mother ever. At least I am in good company with the mess issue though!Claire will catch on long before Zoey so I better let go and let her go at it!

  11. She looks so much like a little girl than a baby. And how about those teeth. Tily is still working on getting her top front ones in. Yah for the mess free that is always a nice thing. I can't get tily to eat out of or off of anything except her tray or else it goes straight to the flore so everything goes directly onto her tray. We have a while yet before we are mess free I'm afraid.

  12. Such a big girl! I hated messes, too, at that learning to eat with a spoon stage. Oatmeal was my trick, too... worked like a charm. Now John Michael eats Cheerios with milk and is pretty clean. We still use a bib to catch the occasional drips, but practice is what they need... Great job!
